Life Path 3: The Communicator, Explained
A Life Path of 3 is read, in this tradition, as the number of communication: a chart built around language, performance and ideas that want an audience, more than around administration or repetition. It is often described as the sociable number: quick with words, quick to lighten a room. What follows is the arithmetic behind it, what the tradition associates with it across a full chart, and an honest note on where the system comes from.
The arithmetic
Take 17 March 1990. The month, March, is the third month, so it stays 3. The day, 17, reduces to 8 (1+7). The year, 1990, reduces to 1 (1+9+9+0 = 19, then 1+9 = 10, then 1+0 = 1). Adding the three reduced figures, 3 + 8 + 1, gives 12, which reduces once to 3 (1+2). That final 3 is the Life Path: month, day and year each reduced on their own first, then added and reduced again.
The same steps work for any birth date. Cast your own chart and every reduction is shown in full, not just the final figure.
Other places a 3 can appear
The same digit can turn up more than once in a chart, worked out differently each time. Life Path comes only from the date of birth. Expression sums every letter of the full birth name; Soul Urge sums only the vowels; Personality sums only the consonants. Take the name Maya Lin: MAYA totals 13 (M4 + A1 + Y7 + A1), LIN totals 17 (L3 + I9 + N5), and 13 + 17 is 30, which reduces to 3 in one step (3+0), an Expression of 3, arrived at from letters rather than a date. A Life Path of 3 and an Expression of 3 are two separate calculations that happen to agree, not the same figure counted twice.
The Birth Day number uses only the day of the month: anyone born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th carries Birth Day 3, whatever their Life Path turns out to be. A Maturity number (Life Path plus Expression, added and reduced once more) is read in the tradition as a shift that comes into focus later in life rather than something felt early on.
What the tradition associates with 3
Across the rest of a chart, the tradition reads a 3 as expressive.
Work: language, performance or dealing directly with clients tends to suit it better than heads-down administration.
Relationships: the one who lightens the room and deflects difficulty with humour rather than sitting inside it.
Money: goes on experience and on things that look or feel good, with the paperwork side of managing it left to slip.
Day to day: starts enthusiastically and needs the thing to stay enjoyable to keep going: a habit that stops being fun tends to stop, full stop.
Scattering is what the tradition flags most consistently as this number's friction: plenty of starts, and a harder time than most staying with any one of them long enough to reach the end.

Where this system comes from
This is not a system with a continuous line back to antiquity. The letter-to-number table used throughout this site was largely assembled by L. Dow Balliett in the early twentieth century and turned into something systematic by her student Juno Jordan; "Pythagorean" was attached to it afterwards, pointing at a real philosophical lineage (Pythagoras and his followers did hold that number underlies reality) without being evidence that he used this particular alphabet table. For the complete picture, see Where these numbers actually come from.
How is this worked out?
What does life path 3 mean?
In this tradition, a Life Path of 3 is read as the number of expression: communication, creativity, and a preference for ideas that get said or performed rather than filed away. It is an interpretation carried by a century-old symbolic system, not a finding about a person.
How is life path 3 calculated?
Reduce the birth month, day and year separately, adding each one's digits together until a single figure remains. Add those three figures and reduce the total the same way, except that 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole rather than reduced further. If the final figure is 3, that is the Life Path.
What work does the tradition associate with life path 3?
Roles built around language, performance or client contact, rather than roles built around quiet repetition. That is a description drawn from a century-old symbolic system, not a recommendation.
Does a life path number ever change?
No. It is fixed by a birth date that does not change. What does move is the Personal Year number, recalculated every year from the same birth date, which is what a forecast reading actually tracks.
