What the numbers stand for

How is this worked out?

The letter values come from the Pythagorean cipher: A–I are 1–9, J–R are 1–9 again, S–Z are 1–8. Your name is added up with that table and the total reduced to one digit, except 11, 22 and 33 which are kept whole.

Where does this come from?

It is called Pythagorean, but that name was attached later. There is no evidence Pythagoras used it. The system you are reading was assembled in the early 1900s, largely by L. Dow Balliett and later systematised by Juno Jordan. So it is about a century old, not ancient.
